Farmers Business Network is New Sponsor

Farmers Business Network (FBN) joined as a sponsor of this year’s Southern Peanut Growers Conference.

The company does things a bit differently, says FBN Account Executive Jared Moore.

“The model of how we do business is we want to cut the middle men out that are stacking on the amount of money they are paying for products and take farm chemicals direct from generic manufacturers to the farm so that we can drive their input prices down and return a better investment on those acres to them,” says Moore. “It’s just a different model of business. Every farmer gets the same price whether you’re one acre or 1,000 acres.”

FBN also works with farmers on cotton and rice acres, and they are looking to expand into specialty markets like chickpeas, for example. Moore says they rely on member input and also offer group rate health insurance based as farmers have shared that need. FBN currently serves more than 8,000 farmer members and 27 million acres.

“Farmers take the most overhead and have the least return,” says Moore. “It’s time for that to change.”

Valent USA presented its Valor Award at the Southeast Peanut Growers Conference, recognizing an individual or group that has made significant contributions to the peanut industry.

This year’s recipient is the American Peanut Shellers, an association that is celebrating 100 years of history in 2019.

“They’ve been a partner with so many different groups and they’ve been creative and innovative in bringing new technology so it was really an honor to be able to present this to them as they celebrate their 100 years of service,” says John Altom, Valent Sales Representative.

Altom says Valor continues to be a key product for Valent as it is effective in fighting Palmer amaranth in peanuts. The company has also introduced MycoApply EndoPrime and has plans for a new fungicide to fight white mold.

The Rise of Peanuts as a Superfood

Cindy Zimmerman2019 Conference, AudioLeave a Comment

A “superfood” is considered to be a nutrient-rich food that is beneficial for health and well-being, so peanuts naturally qualify, and that is something super important for farmers and the industry.

Samara Sterling, Ph.D., director of research for The Peanut Institute, says, “When you compare peanuts to kale, it’s a stark difference in terms of the amount you need to consume to reap the food’s benefits. For example, one serving of peanuts contains six times as much protein as a serving of raw kale and eight times as much niacin.”

Sterling joined Parker Wallace of Parker’s Plate and Sherry Coleman Collins with the National Peanut Board on a panel at the 2019 conference to talk about how peanuts have risen to the ranks of superfood. Listen to their opening remarks here:

Peanuts on Parker’s Plate

One way that self-described “culinary goddess” Parker Wallace gets her groove on in the kitchen is with peanuts.

Author of Parker’s Plate and lover of food, Wallace was on the first general session panel at the 2019 SPGC about “Peanuts Rise to Superfood.” After that, she was “Entertaining with Peanuts” on the spouse program where she showcased her Thai Quinoa and Peanut Salad recipe.

Update from State Peanut Groups

Cindy Zimmerman2019 Conference, AudioLeave a Comment

How does this year’s peanut crop look in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi? We asked the execs for an update.

Jacob Davis is the new guy this year, just starting as executive director for the Alabama Peanut Producers Association on May 1. He says there is some discrepancy in the amount of acreage this year – somewhere between 150,000 and 170,000 acres in the state. Davis adds that dry conditions have been impacting the crop in the southeast part of Alabama.

Florida Peanut Producers Association executive director Ken Barton is happy to welcome the conference back to Panama City Beach and says the Florida crop is in mostly good condition right now with good moisture in most growing areas. However, there are many farmers still waiting for disaster assistance after last year’s Hurricane Michael that swept across the panhandle.

In Georgia, government numbers show a decline in peanut acreage this year but Peanut Commission executive director Don Koehler doesn’t see that. He is happy with the current crop condition, however. Overall, he says while a lot could happen before harvest, the crop looks pretty good right now.

Acreage is down significantly in Mississippi this year, according to Mississippi Peanut Growers Association executive director Malcolm Broome. Where they have been up to as much as 40,000 acres, Broome says changes in base acres in the 2018 farm bill combined with higher supplies and lower prices brought it down to about 25,000 this year.

Corteva – New Name, Same Heart for Peanuts

Cindy Zimmerman2018 Conference, Conference SponsorsLeave a Comment

Earlier this year, the Agriculture Division of DowDuPont™ became known as Corteva Agriscience™ (kohr-‘teh-vah), which is derived from a combination of words meaning “heart” and “nature”.

DuPont has been a major sponsor for the Southern Peanut Growers Conference since 2011 when they started hosting a Friday afternoon family-oriented entertainment option, and Corteva is carrying on that tradition. For the past three years, it has been an afternoon at the Blast Arcade at the Sandestin Resort Baytowne Wharf Village, which is very popular with all ages!

Thanks to Corteva and all of the SPGC sponsors who make the conference such a success every year!
