Peanuts Important to BASF

BASF at SPGCPeanuts are considered to be a specialty or minor crop to many chemical companies and often it is the case that minor use crops get the benefits of major crop developments.

In the case of BASF Headline, it worked the other way.

Regional sales manager William Reed (center) says that versitile fungicide – which is now labeled for use in soybean, corn and wheat – really “cut its teeth in the peanut market.”

“Seeing how well it did on leaf spot and rust and soil-borne diseases – -it really got a great reputation and earned itself a good name in the peanut industry first,” said Reed. “Starting in the peanut area probably helped it spread faster in these other crops.”

So the peanut industry is very important for BASF and that is why they are a sponsor of the Southern Peanut Growers Conference. They sponsored the luncheon on Monday and are also one of the sponsors for the Farm Press Peanut Profitability Award.

Bayer CropScience at SPGCNine companies have been sponsors of the Southern Peanut Growers Conference for all ten years of its existence and one of them is Bayer CropScience. Here is a family photo of the Bayer team at their booth here, with the recognition award they received for ten years of sponsorship on display.

I finally got a chance to chat with regional sales manager Chris Payne about Bayer CropScience peanut products. “There’s been a lot of changes in our company and the peanut industry in the last ten years,” Chris says. “We’ve had new product labels like Provost fungicide, we’ve seen changes in growth in the Temik at-plant business, as well as Absolute fungicide.”

Chris says it has been their pleasure to be a sponsor for the conference for the last ten years. Listen to his interview here:

Trimble-Ag Technologies SPGCNew technology and new media are a perfect fit, so it is fitting that Trimble/Ag Technologies is the sponsor of this blog coverage of the Southern Peanut Growers Conference.

I got a chance to chat with Josh Pitts of Ag Technologies, Trimble regional sales manager Tim East and
Brian Kelley with Ag Technologies who are here representing the companies.

Tim says they chose to sponsor this coverage because, like precision agriculture, it is “cutting edge – a high-tech way of communicating, getting ideas out and sharing experiences.”

Grilled PBJ National Peanut Buying PointsHe is known to many in the southeast as “Mr. Peanut” – the voice of authority when it comes to peanuts on the Southeast Agnet.

Tyron Spearman is also the executive director for the National Peanut Buying Points Association and he poses here with some of his members making grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the Southern Peanut Growers Conference on Sunday. Tyron is the one on the left, if you don’t know him. I just met him myself today – even though I also do programming for the Southeast Agnet. Our paths just never crossed until today.

In this interview, Tyron talks about what the NPBPA does and why they take an active role as a sponsor of the annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference.

How to Grill Peanut Butter and Jelly

Grilled PBJI tried something new today that I had frankly never even thought of eating before – grilled peanut butter and jelly. Don’t know why I never thought of it – after all, I like toast with peanut butter and jelly. But, grilling gives it a much richer flavor that, as Wesley Powell of Bainbridge, Georgia says goes great with a tall glass of cold milk for breakfast. Add some sliced bananas and you have yourself an “Elvis” sandwich!

Powell is past president of the National Peanut Buying Points Association, which grills up these tasty morsels every year at the SPGC. He shares his secrets to making the perfect grilled PB and J in this interview.

Chets PB ProductsI mentioned Chet’s Peanut Butter toppings in the last post – here’s a close up of this fantastic new product for the peanut industry. It’s only been out there for about six months and already a buzz is getting started.

Leslie WagnerLeslie Wagner with the Peanut Advisory Board says they have been working to help market this new product. “We love working with brand new companies especially if they have an innovative thing going on,” Leslie told me. “It’s great for backpacking and traveling because it squeezes flat, not like a jar. It’s a great idea!”

Finding innovative new ways to market peanuts and peanut butter is the whole purpose of the Peanut Advisory Board, which represents growers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi. Find out more about what they do in this interview with Leslie.
