Cindy Zimmerman2018 Conference, Audio, Video2 Comments

J. Frank McGill was chosen as this year’s Valor Award winner, sponsored by Valent. Known as “Mr. Peanut,” Dr. McGill served as president of the American Peanut Research and Education Society; chairman of the University of Georgia Agronomists, the U.S. Task Force on Peanut Policy and the U.S. Peanut Improvement Working Group. He was technical advisor to the Georgia Peanut Commission, U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, National Peanut Council and National Peanut Growers Group. He traveled to 21 foreign countries as a peanut consultant.

Still very active at 92 years old, Dr. McGill was unable to make it to the conference to receive his award because he just recently fell off a ladder and hurt his ankle. But we did have a nice video of him, which can be viewed below.

The award was presented by David Yoder with Valent, which has been a sponsor of the conference for 20 years. The award is named for Valent’s popular peanut herbicide.

Established in 1984 by a grant from the U.S. Congress, the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) uses comprehensive data and computer modeling systems to analyze the economic impact of policy decisions on the food and agriculture industry. FAPRI director Dr. Pat Westhoff shared some of his insights on the economic impact of the farm bill at the Southern Peanut Growers Conference this year.

Dr. Westhoff talked about how FAPRI’s projections earlier this year are being impacted by the uncertain trade situation with China and how it all can impact peanuts.

NewLeaf Symbiotics launched a new class of agricultural biologicals this year and a product targeted specifically for peanuts.

Terrasym™ nutrient-enhancing products are a totally new class of natural, beneficial biologicals called M-trophs. Terrasym 401 is a seed treatment for soybeans that maximizes the yield potential by enhancing plant nutrition and Terrasym 402 is a bio-complement applied to peanuts that provides season-long performance and significantly higher yields. Both products are marketed through a network of strong regional partners.

Vice president for business development Mike McFatrich says they attended the Southern Peanut Growers Conference this year for the first time to showcase this new technology.

Peanuts Help Drive the Rural Economy

Dr. Kent Wolfe, director of the Center for Agribusiness & Economic Development at the University of Georgia, says increasing population movement out of rural counties make farming even more important to the economic health of those areas.

“Peanut production in those communities is very, very vital,” said Dr. Wolfe in his presentation to the SPGC. “It supports a lot of the other businesses and industries in the county.”

Southern Peanut Farmers Federation Activities

Cindy Zimmerman2018 Conference, Audio1 Comment

Jessie Bland with the Georgia Peanut Commission and Kaye Lynn Hataway of the Alabama Peanut Producers provided an update on recent activities of the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation (SPFF) on behalf of its members in all four states.

Jessie talked about research and promotion efforts, while Kaye Lynn discussed some of the education and legislative outreach.

SPFF was established in 1998 to allow Southeastern peanut producers to speak with a unified voice on policy issues and to avoid duplication in research and promotional efforts.

One program that has been particularly beneficial to the industry is the Peanut Leadership Academy, sponsored by Syngenta Crop Protection and the American Peanut Shellers Association. The program began in 1998 with the first class of 14 peanut growers from Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and today includes growers from Mississippi, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia as well as sheller representatives.

Learn more about what SPFF has done for you lately by listening to their presentations and interviews here.

The 20th Annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference will be held July 19-21, 2018 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, Miramar Beach, Florida.

The three-day event provides farmers with information about peanut production, legislative issues, marketing and promotions. In addition to the conference sessions, the event focuses on the family by offering family activities and a golf tournament. Farmers are also able to visit with many of the conference sponsors throughout the event.

Vantage Southeast is once again sponsor of the official conference blog, where you can find photos, interviews and news about the meeting, as well as archives going back to 2008.

Georgia Peanut Commission Executive Director Don Koehler helped to organize the first conference 20 years ago with his counterparts in Alabama and Florida. “I’m excited that this conference has grown and happy that we’ve seen 20 years of success,” said Koehler.

Among the timely topics that will be addressed at the conference is the 2018 farm bill and House Agriculture Committee member Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL) will be attending to provide farmers with an update.

In this interview, Koehler provides look back on 20 years of the Southern Peanut Growers Conference and a preview of this year’s conference this week. Listen To MP3 Interview with Don Koehler, Ga Peanut Commission
